Peering
from cabinets, impaled on poles, spitting water from high
atop three stories, lit by bulbs and candles… dozens of
gargoyles and grotesques have silently taken over the
City Museum. Some are part of the permanent show at the
Museum, while others rotate into the public’s consciousness
as part of a special spring/summer show “Gargoyles and
Fallen Angels,” housed on the City Museum’s third floor.
Incorporating a large number of recently-collected gargoyles
and grotesques into the Museum’s standing collection has
mirrored the City Museum’s long-running commitment to
creative re-uses of discarded, forgotten, abused and ignored
items. Every piece has it’s own story. Whether it came
from a few blocks away, in urban, inner city St. Louis,
or from half-a-world away. Taking these pieces and showing
them in a public, display-type setting, the City Museum
hopes to inspire people to think about the role of preservation
that a person plays in society.
